The Holy Church of Saint Demetrius (Agios Dimitrios) in Thessaloniki, Greece, is one of the city's most significant religious and historical landmarks. Dedicated to Saint Demetrius, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, the church stands on the site where he was martyred in the early 4th century during the Roman persecution of Christians. Originally built as a small oratory in the late 4th century, it was expanded into a grand five-aisled basilica in the 7th century. The church has endured fires, earthquakes, and Ottoman rule, even serving as a mosque for nearly four centuries. Restored to Christian worship in 1912, it houses stunning Byzantine mosaics, intricate frescoes, and a crypt believed to be where Saint Demetrius was imprisoned and executed.
